Pintor estadounidense. En 1775 viajó a Londres, y trabajó durante seis años con Benjamin West. En Londres abrió su propio taller en 1782, y gozó de un gran éxito, pero huyó a Dublín en 1787, para escapar de sus acreedores. Luego de seis años en esa ciudad, regresó a EE.UU. Desarrolló un distintivo estilo de retrato estadounidense, y rápidamente se consolidó como el retratista más importante de esta nación. Los críticos han elogiado su pincelada pictórica, la luminosidad del color y su agudeza psicológica. Entre sus casi 1.000 retratos, el más famoso es una cabeza inconclusa de
George Washington (1796).
